Learning unit contents
This course offers an initial approach to using the scientific method to address fundamental or applied research questions in psychology and speech therapy. It provides a general introduction to the different types of quantitative research (descriptive, correlational, and experimental), considering their possibilities, advantages, and limitations. The potential biases associated with the use of classical methods such as observation, questionnaires, and measurement scales, as well as experimental designs, are also examined.
In person, we conduct a methodological analysis of scientific articles, reviewing the conceptual, methodological, empirical, and analytical stages of research.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
A good understanding of research methods in psychology and speech therapy allows one to respond to the claims and conclusions of a study more impartially, setting aside personal expectations and beliefs. Learning research methods is essential for developing critical thinking, which is particularly important in the current context of the reproducibility crisis that calls for increased methodological knowledge.
Understanding fundamental concepts:
- Differentiation and operationalization of variables in an experiment.
- Understanding what is necessary to develop a testable hypothesis.
- Understanding the concepts of internal and external validity.
- Understanding the control of external variables that pose potential threats to the internal validity of an experiment through randomization and control processes.
- Distinguishing between descriptive, correlational, and experimental research (their objectives, methods, and tools).
- Distinguishing basic experimental designs.
- Developing an intuitive understanding of the concept of main effects and interactions.
- Using reliable and valid data collection techniques.
- Knowing the ethical principles of research in psychology/speech therapy.
- Recognizing what constitutes quality reporting of a study (description of bias prevention measures, transparency of all methodological aspects).
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
On eCampus: Screencasts will provide an initial approach to basic concepts; exercises to complete will help progress in learning the material.
In person: Methodological examination of descriptive, correlational, and experimental research; answering questions, exercises.
It will be necessary to follow the instructions provided in class and on eCampus.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
The eCampus platform will serve as support for learning; it will therefore be necessary to follow any updates in terms of content and exercises on this platform.
In preparation for the classroom sessions, the eCampus platform will offer learning activities via screencasts.
The face-to-face sessions will provide concrete examples of research in several sectors of psychology and speech therapy. They will allow you to return to and deepen the material presented in the screencasts.
Attendance at the course is therefore strongly recommended.
