Learning unit contents
Psychiatry is a medical speciality that focuses on the biopsychosocial study of the aetiology, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of psychiatric disorders, which occur alone or combined with other disorders of medical or surgical origin.
Psychopharmacology, through the basic principles of neurochemistry and neuroanatomy, explores the main classes of pharmacological agents used in Psychiatry, depending on the clinical syndromes.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Detect the signs and symptoms of common psychiatric disorders
- Identify risk factors and prevention for psychiatric disorders
- Communicate with the patient respectfully without showing stigma
- For each disorder: 1) be familiar with the epidemiological data; 2) apply the steps of the diagnosis by incorporating the decision-making algorithms, semiology and differential diagnosis; 3) argue the therapeutic possibilities by integrating the etiopathogenic mechanisms
- For each class of pharmacological agents used in Psychiatry: 1) know the mechanisms of action; 2) Understand the clinical implications; 3) Know the side effects and possible interactions
- Recognize clinical situations where interprofessional collaboration would be indicated

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This course is mainly taught through lectures, presented in modular form and accompanied by discussions, educational video clips and a link with society. With the aim of favouring the active appropriation of knowledge, an online course is associated with the lectures and is available on eCampus. The subject is intentionally fragmented into short segments to favour its integration.
