Learning unit contents
The Introduction to Research in the Social Sciences course aims to introduce students to research in the humanities and social sciences by :
- Articulating different tools and concepts around a single research object to be studied and analysed in groups,
- Developing and mastering (at the end of the course) a six-steps methodological and conceptual toolbox that can be transposed to any research process.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
In this context, students will be required to:
- Carry out various practical exercises in groups,
- Identify and define a concrete research object to be analysed,
- Progressively build a research approach based on methodological supports and references made available during the course sessions,
- Research and test theoretical concepts/references related to the research problematic investigated during the course.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
For HRM students: METO0820-1 is prerequisite.
For LS and MIPGC students: /
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course uses different teaching methods:
- flipped classroom approach,
- group works,
- peer review.
The course is participatory and dynamic. It is based on the students' opinions, reflections, and observations. Throughout the year, students will be invited to collaborate in the production of formative, summative and qualifying works in group.
Attendance at the various sessions is not compulsory, but is encouraged. However, in order to ensure that the sessions run smoothly and to maintain qualitative follow-up in the ongoing research process, we ask that at least one member of each group attend the coaching sessions.

Additional information:
The mode of delivery of this course is hybrid (combination of face-to-face and distance learning activities) via the tools of the Ultra platform (formerly eCampus).
These conditions are subject to change according to sanitary conditions.

Continuous assessment
Additional information:
The course is based on several modes of evaluation:
- Remote assessment,
- Written and oral assessment on a scientific article,
- Continuous assessment through various group works and peer reviews,
- Assignement - report.
The final evaluation of the course is based on three modes of evaluation via Ultra (formerly eCampus):
- The oral and written presentation of a scientific article - theoretical or methodological - by groups: 5 points of the final course grade.
- The peer review of the first five intermediate exercises (Module 1 to Module 5) due on the indicated dates (see calendar in the course material): 10 points of the final course grade.
- The final assessment based on the last exercice (Module 6) to be handed in for the last class session (see calendar in the course material): 5 points of the final course grade.
Second session:
- The work must be submitted by e-mail, with all supervisors and group members copied by the 1st day of the second session.
- The work can be done individually or in a group (to be justified by e-mail to the reference supervisor).
- the oral and written presentation of the scientific article: you must draw up a new written summary using the basic instructions.
- one (or more) of the peer review forms: you must write a reflective note (max. 2 pages) on the module to be improved, specifying what went wrong, the reasons for this failure, the consequences for the research process in progress and what you could do to improve the situation, based on the evaluation criteria in the outline for the module(s) concerned.
- in Module 6: you must repeat the entire exercise.
