Learning unit contents
The remedial course has the aim of revising the basic grammatical structures as well as training reading comprehension skills.
Here is the detail of the CEFRL levels of the course : reading (B1); [speaking (B1), writing (B1)]

- Refreshing and increasing students' knowledge of grammar.
- Activating reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, detecting text coherence.
- Expanding the vocabulary related to the fields of psychology

A basic knowledge of English (equivalent to the A2-level of the CEFRL)

Compulsory placement test on 30/09 from 4:30pm until 6:30pm.

Weekly 90-minute classes in average-sized groups.
The course module will be devoted to revising the basics of English grammar as well as the training of reading skills.
Students will have to prepare the reading file at home for the final exam. This reading file is made up of articles related to the field of psychology.
Regular practise is key to the student's progress.

Additional information:
1° A test will assess students' assimilation of the grammar rules and vocabulary seen in class during the first semester. This test will take place in January and account for 35% of the final mark.
2° The final written exam (65% of the final mark) will be based on 1) the grammar modules, 2) the vocabulary of all texts seen in class as well as the general vocabulary from the grammar book) 3) the reading file. It will assess students' reading abilities as well as their knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary seen in class.
Multiple Choice Questions will be used for both the January test and the written exam in June.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
Students can train on-line on the "grammaire de base interactive" module on e-campus.
Students can also sign up for one of the English courses organised within the framework of the so-called @lter program. These interactive courses ideally complement the first-year refresher course as well as the second-year level A course.
IMPORTANT!!!
All 1st "BLOC" students who registered for the first time at the FPLSE in September 2024 (except see N.B. below) will have to take a placement test which will be organised from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm on September 30 2024 online on ecampus (myuliege). The students who want to will be able to take this test on their computer in amphi Bacq & Florkin (B35a 1/8 in Sart Tilman) from 4.30 to 6.30 pm.
This test will include vocabulary, grammar and reading comprehension exercises.
The students who obtain the highest marks will be allowed to take the level-A class in 1st "BLOC" - LANG0041. The other students will take this remedial class (LANG0040-1).
N.B.: Students who have never studied English or have a recent (=2023 or 2022) official certificate attesting that they have reached the European level B1 or B2 in English (e.g. TOEFL or FCE) have to send an email with their last name, first name, student ID, a copy of their certificate including their name, their result & the date (if they took an official language test - see above) to n.schraepen@uliege.be for the end of September at the latest.
