The class is designed around the translation of extracts from literature, which will be chosen according to genre and author. The aim of this selection is to enable students to work on certain literary concepts which are relevant to translation in this field, and to become familiar with certain authors to identify their own style and voice and learn how to render these characteristics in French.
This year, the concepts covered will relate to autobiographical fiction and intertextuality. From this perspective, extracts from works by several contemporary Spanish authors will be studied, including Juan José Millás, Esther Tusquets and, in particular, Javier Marías.

By the end of this teaching unit, students will have:
- improved their understanding of literary Spanish (in its peninsular and contemporary variants);
- learned to recognise the different registers present in the texts studied (narration, dialogue, etc.), and to reflect on how to adapt them to French;
- learned to recognise the marks of a style specific to each author studied and to reflect on how to render these characteristics in French;
- worked on concepts such as autobiographical fiction or intertextuality and applied this knowledge to the practice of literary translation.

The teaching method is based on two equally important working fields:
- on the one hand, preparation of a translation by each student at home, then shared and discussed in class;
- on the other, translation workshops around a document which has not been prepared in advance. The class will be divided into groups working together on these documents. The aim of this method is to develop all issues or differences emerging from these discussions and to support the work of each student as they progress.

Translation of an extract from a work by one of the authors on the programme, to be completed at home.
Oral evaluation:
Students are asked to comment upon their translation.
This teaching unit adopts the "note absorbante" principle, which means that if a grade of 8/20 is attributed to any of the learning activities, this becomes the overall grade for the teaching unit. Only the exam for the failed teaching unit will be resat in the second session.
