Learning unit contents

Qualitative research primarily aims to study the nature, quality, and meaning of human experience through exploration or observation, most often in a natural setting, of people's discourses and narratives.

The course provides training in the theoretical foundations of qualitative research by presenting theories (of experience, narrative, inquiry), historically significant schools of thought or events (Chicago School, Symbolic Interactionism, Narrative Turn), as well as the diversity of approaches (phenomenology, grounded theory, narrative approaches, discourse analysis, participatory research, etc.). The course also introduces students to qualitative analysis of empirical data.

The goal is to understand and situate the importance of producing knowledge in psychological sciences by using qualitative methods to document contemporary issues (health, justice, education...).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Situating qualitative research within a paradigmatic framework and within the history of the human and social sciences
  • Understanding the theories of experience, narrative, and inquiry
  • Knowing and differentiating the various approaches and methods of analysis in qualitative research
  • Knowing when and for whom to apply qualitative research in psychological sciences
  • Understanding the steps of reflexive thematic analysis
