Learning unit contents

This course focuses on cross-disciplinary notions and tools.

We will discuss the following points:

  • The framework of the clinical interview
  • Fundamental attitudes in clinical psychology: empathy, unconditional positive regard, genuineness
  • Relational responses: a categorization of interactions
  • Non-verbal behaviour in clinical interviewing
  • Motivational interviewing: how to work on patient motivation
  • Self-care
  • Grief and death
  • Suicide: identifying and preventing
  • The diagnostic approach (DSM-5 and CIM-11) and its alternatives
  • The processual approach
  • Holistic modeling
  • Functional modeling
Other themes may be addressed based on students' questions.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, students will:

  • know the different elements of the clinical interview framework and be able to position oneself in relation to these elements
  • understand the fundamental attitudes in clinical psychology and decode situations through these attitudes
  • be able to recognize and formulate the 6 types of relational responses, while being aware of the contributions and limits of each type of response
  • be familiar with the different aspects of non-verbal communication and be able to identify them in interactions
  • understand the concept of psychic reality
  • understand motivational theories, establish a motivational balance, encourage change and manage resistance
  • recognize personal limits, assess fatigue and develop self-care strategies
  • understand the different stages of grief and how to deal with them
  • be aware of the representations they have of death and suicide
  • be able to assess the risk of suicide and learn about prevention strategies
  • criticize diagnostic and transdiagnostic approaches
  • understand the processual approach
  • develop case-based holistic and functional model
