Learning unit contents

For readability purposes, these pedagogical commitments are not written in inclusive language, but they nevertheless apply to men, women, and non-binary individuals.

This course introduces students to the clinical approach in psychology, specifically addressing the following elements:

  • The framework of the psychological assessment;
  • Clinical reasoning processes and the cognitive biases associated with them;
  • The application of the Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) approach;
  • The organization of the psychological assessment: from understanding the request to shared decision-making with the patient;
  • The collection of additional information in the context of a psychological assessment: types of information (symptomatology, values, context, etc.) and methods of collection (interview, observation, and structured evaluation);
  • Interview techniques: non-selective active listening, selective active listening, and regulation;
  • Observation methods: decoding reality, characteristics of observation, advantages, and limitations;
  • Psychometric evaluation: the use of standardized tests, their psychometric qualities, and the elements to consider when interpreting the results in light of normative reference data;
  • The principles of shared decision-making with the patient.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course is part of a training program. Several concepts will be revisited and further explored in the PSYC5915 and PSYC5916 courses; a higher level of competency mastery will also be expected in various Master's courses and during internships. For this course, the learning outcomes are tailored to the end of the Bachelor's degree cycle. Specifically, by the end of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Explain the framework of the clinical assessment, the principles of the person-centered approach, and the clinical reasoning processes;
  • Explain and illustrate the cognitive biases that may arise during clinical reasoning;
  • Demonstrate a "novice" level of mastery in clinical reasoning within the context of a psychological assessment;
  • Justify their analyses and decision-making based on the pillars of EBP;
  • Compare two clinical cases;
  • Use interview techniques that support the therapeutic alliance and the gathering of information in a clinical interview.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

A solid knowledge of evidence-based data research, statistics, and psychometrics is required: therefore, it may be useful to review the material covered in the courses "The Research Pillar in Evidence-Based Practice," "Psychostatistics - Part 1," and "Introduction to Psychometrics."

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

This course is based on in-person sessions, eLearning (on eCampus and through a MOOC), and practical sessions (some of which are mandatory, while others are optional).

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Blended learning

Further information:

Combination of in-person and remote learning activities during both semesters.

Additional information:

Three cycles of practical sessions will be organized:

  • TP 1 "online clinical reasoning" - eLearning exercises focusing on clinical reasoning for each stage of the psychological assessment: mandatory completion, included in the evaluation criteria.
  • TP 2 "interview techniques" - Practice of interview techniques (four 2-hour sessions): mandatory participation, included in the evaluation criteria.
  • TP 3 "complete clinical reasoning" - Integrative exercise (three 2-hour sessions): optional participation, not included in the evaluation criteria.
Details and timetables will be communicated during the course.

Course materials and recommended or required readings

Platform(s) used for course materials:
- eCampus
- MyULiège

Further information:

Slides and other course-related documents (e.g., scientific articles) will be uploaded to eCampus as the academic year progresses. Course-related communications will be sent via the MyULiège email system.

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )

Continuous assessment

Further information:

1° Completion of Practical Work

The completion of the "online clinical reasoning" practical sessions and the "interview techniques" practical sessions is mandatory. One absence from an "interview techniques" practical session is allowed, as well as not completing 20% of the "online clinical reasoning" practical sessions. Exceeding these limits, even with a medical certificate, will result in an automatic failure in the first session, and access to the "green-orange-red light" session will not be permitted (see point 2°).

In the case of a second session, the student must attend the make-up practical sessions organized for the second session and submit an interview video by August 16 (see point 2°), or they will automatically fail the second session.

2° Sufficient Mastery of Interview Techniques

A "green-orange-red light" session on interview techniques will be held during Q2 with the tutor who supervised the student in the "interview techniques" practical sessions. During this session, the student will conduct an 8-minute interview, utilizing the interview techniques practiced in the practical sessions. The tutor will assess the student's mastery of interview techniques using a color code: "green light," "orange light," or "red light" (based on a specific evaluation grid). The student must achieve a "green light." If the student receives an "orange light" or a "red light," they must create a video within the next 15 days, in which they film themselves conducting an interview (precise instructions will be provided during the course). This video will then be reviewed by one of the course instructors, who will re-evaluate the student's mastery of interview techniques using the same criteria grid. This video provides a second opportunity to obtain a "green light" or an "orange light." A "red light" will automatically result in failure in the first session, and a new video must be submitted by August 16. A "red light" in the second session will result in another automatic failure.

3° Passing the Written Exam

January midterm (50%) = written exam on the concepts covered and practiced during the first semester, consisting of closed or short open-ended questions. June midterm (50%) = written exam on the concepts covered and practiced during the second semester, consisting of open-ended questions.

Both midterms are mandatory. The average of the two grades will be calculated, provided that the student obtains at least 10/20 on one midterm and at least 9/10 on the other. If not, the failed midterm(s) (score below 10/20) must be retaken in the second session, and the lowest insufficient grade will be recorded. The same criteria apply in the second session. Note that exemptions do not carry over from one year to the next.
