Learning unit contents
The course addresses the nature of leadership. Indeed, leadership is a central component of human activity, including in modern organizations in which it is seen as pivotal to achieving strategic objectives and fostering the organizational culture. Whether directing to specific individuals or processes, understanding the defining characteristics of what leadership is and its underlying mechanisms and outcomes at the individual, group, and organizational levels are critical for business students.
The course aims to introduce students to the defining characteristics of leadership, present the major theoretical approaches, and explain the processes leading to organizational performance and development. It offers students a thorough and research-based understanding of leadership issues in modern organizations.
The course is structured around the presentation of the leadership schools:
- Trait approach
- Behavioral and skills approach
- Leadership in contingencies, context, and situations
- Motivation processes
- New leadership approaches
- Current issues in leadership
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The intended learning outcomes (ILO) of the course are:
- Understand the key concepts of leadership and their related theories;
- Critically compare and analyze different theories of leadership;
- Identify the key concepts and theories that best apply to real-life situations and problems;
- Design and implement effective solutions to real-life situations and problems based on a scientific approach and thinking;
- Initiate reflexivity and developmental activities about leadership;
- Communicate one's point of view and confront it with others.

Further information:
During the first session, the course evaluation is composed of (1) an individual exam during the session (15 points; 75%) and (2) continuing learning activities during the semester (5 points; 25%).
The course evaluation only comprises an individual exam during the second session. Students scoring 5/5 in the continuing learning activities during the semester/first session will receive one bonus point for the second session exam.
The individual exams will consist of multiple-choice questions and one or several open-ended questions. The continuing learning activities involve both in-class (e.g., exercises, group activities) and out-class activities (e.g., interviewing a leader, analyzing real-life situations).
