Learning unit contents

This course is divided into three parts :

> The first part of the course deals with the fundamental and constitutional principles governing the functioning of the Ministry of Justice. The aim is to help students understand how the different jurisdictions of the Belgian judicial system work. The jurisdictions are also analysed.

> Part II deals mainly with mediations in the penal field and sentences and measures in the community. A part of the module is also devoted to the meaning and purposes of criminal sanctions.

> Part III is dealing with the following topics:

- Restorative justice for juvenile offenders

- Historical and sociological contexts associated with the implementation of mediation: A new conception of the penal response

- Expectations and representations of victims

Knowledge: Being able to define and describe different frameworks and concepts.

Understanding: Being able to explain issues related to Belgian justice, criminal sanctions, mediation, and restorative justice.

Synthesis: To be able to associate and reorganize the knowledge in a transversal and interdisciplinary understanding and to explain them in a synthetic and integrative approach.

The course is given face-to-face for parts 1 and 2. For part 3, the course is hybrid and combines face-to-face sessions and the follow-up of Mooc capsules "Victims, introduction to victimology".
