Learning unit contents

The study of Spanish-speaking culture (history, politics, socio-cultural context, current affairs) through the analysis of written documents, videos, audio, films and press articles. Deepening of certain grammatical rules.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Ability to produce a coherent, syntactically and grammatically correct written text of medium difficulty on the themes addressed.
Ability to produce a coherent, syntactically and grammatically correct oral text of medium difficulty on the themes addressed.
Ability to understand a text, analyse and establish links with the current affairs, culture and history of the Spanish-speaking world.
Ability to understand a speech and summarise the general idea.
Ability to summarise a text, paraphrase its content and comment upon it.
Ability to analyse a document and identify textual difficulties.
Ability to analyse the implicit meaning of an oral or written text.
Ability to use new concepts studied through the texts to develop lexical skills.
Ability to develop critical thinking.
Ability to develop general knowledge.
Ability to develop intellectual curiosity.
Ability to work in a team (see oral group presentation).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Have a good knowledge of written and oral Spanish.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Students will prepare documents (summarise, paraphrase, understand new vocabulary, answer questions on the document, etc) at home. Classes will be the opportunity to share students' answers and to compare different points of view, leading to a discussion on the given theme.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Two hours of classes with Ms Y. Lorente Carrillo and one hour class with Ms E. Voidanidis in the second term.

First session
20%: oral presentation on a theme addressed in class.
40%: written examination.
40%: oral examination. Students will be asked questions about the books (see above).
