Learning unit contents
This class is meant as an introduction to the (internal and external) history of the Dutch language. It deals with the following issues:
- Basic concepts: standard language, standard Dutch, different standardisation processes.
- Historic standardisation of the Dutch language.
- New process of standardisation in the Netherlands and Flanders at the end of the 20th century.
- Variation and linguistic change
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
1) Understanding of the different processes of standardisation of the Dutch language 2) Ability to use specialised literature in a critical manner, with a view to deepening the student's knowledge in the field.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Understanding of written and spoken Dutch.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Critical reading and presentation of the relevant scientific litterature. Analysis of examples that are representative of various stages and/or evolutionary mecanisms.
