Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

Epistemological and didactic analysis of didactic transpositions relating to the contents of common core mathematics programs.

Elements of mathematics teaching articulating Brousseau's Theory of Didactic Situations and Chevallard's Anthropological Theory of Didactics, as well as other conceptual frameworks and other research results.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course goes beyond a normative perspective. It is not a question of "adopting" or "rejecting" this or that way of teaching a given mathematical content, among the possibilities described and analyzed during didactics. What is aimed above all is:

  • the mastery of mathematics taught in secondary schools, and their links with underlying mathematical knowledge;
  • the mastery of didactic concepts, for the purposes of didactic and epistemological analysis of teaching systems;
  • the ability to question the targeted mathematical knowledge and its didactic transposition.
These skills must be mastered to promote reflexivity regarding practice during internships and an open-mindedness to multiple ways of considering teaching. It is in this perspective that reflective practices are constantly located.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

In-depth knowledge of the mathematics taught in secondary education, and of the underlying mathematical knowledge.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

There are multiple learning activities:

  • Preparation of lessons, personal work and work in small groups.
  • Problem-based learning designed to promote systemic consideration of mathematical, epistemological and didactic aspects.
  • Ex cathedra course.
  • Readings followed by questions answering sessions.
  • Debates organized on teaching practices, including those of students.
Regular questions.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Further information:

Mainly face-to-face.

Student autonomy in managing their readings and the work preparation phases.

Course materials and recommended or required readings

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

oral exam

Written work / report

Further information:

Oral examination, based on a written submission submitted in advance.

The assessment takes into account the following aspects:

  • the mastery of disciplinary prerequisites: common core mathematics and underlying mathematical knowledge;
  • the mastery of didactic concepts and the ability to use them to carry out didactic analyses.
