Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Scientific English II
The objectives of the English course are twofold:
- develop the understanding of scientific information presented orally, and
- reinforce the students' knowledge of the vocabulary of veterinary English through various listening comprehension and note-taking exercises.
Critical appraisal of scientific literature
The objective of this course is twofold: first, to develop critical thinking in students when reading scientific publications, and second, to familiarize them with the different types of scientific publications they will encounter during their studies and professional careers.
It involves a two-pronged approach:
- Theoretical approach: In lectures, this section enables students (i) to identify the different types of scientific articles (study designs), (ii) to understand the factors that may distort study results (bias), and (iii) to select the most relevant data based on specific needs.
- Practical approach: given in small groups, this section allows students (i) to critically assess the quality of a scientific article, considering the methodology, biases, and other relevant factors, and (ii) to design an appropriate methodology for conducting a study while minimizing methodological errors.
Introduction to occupational and interpersonal skills
Students will be sensitized to the importance of communication in healthcare, in a veterinary and sometimes also in an interdisciplinary context

The marks obtained for the different modules of VETE2109 will be merged in a single grade out of 20, with English accounting for 60%. There is no mark for the integration module, but all the module assignments must have been done for the global grade based on the other module to be calculated. Attendance at the integration module classes is compulsory.
The global grade for VETE2109 is a weighted mean of the marks obtained in the two modules of the course, except if one of the two module marks is equal to or smaller than 8.0/20. In this case, it is that fail mark (of 8 or less) that will be used as global grade for the course VETE2109.
In the September (resit) session, the students have to resit only the module for which they did not obtain marks equal to or greater than 10.0/20. They cannot resit module they have already passed.
Partial exemptions (based on pass grades of 10.0 or more in one or more modules) will be carried over from one academic year to the next.

Additional information:
The students' ability to accurately understand veterinary information given orally will be assessed through a compulsory listening comprehension and note-taking test. The students will be asked to listen to a 15-minute veterinary talk and answer MCT questions and a few short-answer open questions based on the notes they have taken.
The English module is assessed twice in January (50% of the module grade) and in June (50% of the module grade). There's only one listening comprehension in the resit exam.
The English grade accounts for 60% of the global grade of VETE2109. However, if the grade for English is less than or equal to 8.00/20, this failed grade will be used as global grade for VETE2109.
In September, the students have to resit only the module(s) for which they did not obtain marks equal to or greater than 10.00/20.
Partial exemptions (based on pass grades of 10.00 or more in one or more modules) will be carried over from one academic year to the next.
