Learning unit contents

This Course Module is based on learning the various methods of prevention and control of weeds and pests.
The course presents the principles, illustrating and comparing them through case studies, cultural (including agroecology) and genetic methods, physical methods, biological control and chemical control methods by means of pesticides and biopesticides. The essential conditions for the achievement of effectiveness, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each method are exposed. Presentation of the theoretical bases of integrated pest management. The course develops in its various aspects plant protection products: nature and properties of active substances and biocontrol agents, toxicology and ecotoxicology, regulations on pesticides (marketing and use), formulation of pesticides and biopesticides, environmental effects, application techniques.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, the student will have demonstrated his ability to use in practical activities and to return during the final college exam: His knowledge of the different methods of control; His understanding of the benefits and limitations of each of these methods of prevention and control; His understanding of the concept of "integrated pest management"; His knowledge of detection of regulated pests and methods of certification; His knowledge of pesticides, biopesticides and biocontrol agents in general (origin, nature, properties, resistance, compatibility, undesired effects, toxicity and ecotoxicity, formulation and packaging, etc.); His understanding of modes of action and how to use pesticides and biopesticides; His knowledge of the main application techniques and the parameters which allow a homogeneous distribution, a good efficiency and a lack of drift; His knowledge of the regulatory framework for plant protection (regulations on pesticides, water protection, quarantine pests, etc.); His understanding of the intervention approach and the elements to be considered in choosing a method or a combination of intervention methods. In particular, he must be able to: Identify the methods of control to propose, alone or in combination, for the prevention and / or the control against a bioagressor; Explain how to achieve effective prevention and control by meeting regulatory requirements, minimizing health and environmental effects, and avoiding resistance; Explain the steps leading to the development of a plant protection product (pesticide or biopesticide) and its placing on the market (research, development, registration); Explain how to set a spreading device for a given treatment (working speed, nozzle selection, pressure setting, flow rate, etc.); Analyze the biological, regulatory and socioeconomic constraints that influence the choice of effective intervention methods for the prevention, control or elimination of weeds and bio-aggressors.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic background in biology, entomology, weed science, phytopathology.

* Personal work to be done: observation of pests in the field and Research information and documentation on available control methods
* Group work including an oral presentation: report of the observations and application of the theoretical elements presented to the cases (integration of the data, synthesis)
* Preparation of the individual final evaluation during an oral and collegial examination
