Contents:

- Practical comprehension and listening exercises and note-taking based on authentic recorded material in UK and US English.

- Practical comprehension exercises in reading texts with different contents, summary, critical comment, lexical and cultural exploitation. 

- Practical exercises based on video and tv shows used in class.

- Writing exercises based on materials used in class.

- Exercises on word definition and paraphrasing

- Initiation to anglophone cultures through the texts and material discussed in class.

English language in practice

By the end of the year, students will be able to:

- summarise and critically comment on texts and digital material with various styles and contents (to develop one's ability to synthesize, criticize and analyze)

- define certain words from the text, find their synonyms, antonyms and summarise paragraphs.

- understand authentic audiovisual material

- be at ease with the Anglophone vocabulary and cultural elements required to understand written and audiovisual material discussed in class (history, politics, economics, a range of socio-cultural material, news, ...)

-do research to understand the cultural references mentioned in the texts and listening comprehensions analyzed in class (to develop personal research skills)

Good command of the English language, with the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary necessary to understand and criticize complex texts.

Good grasp of oral English so as to understand authentic audiovisual material.

English language in practice

Participating in debates and oral exercises in class is compulsory. Learning is based as much on personal research and individual preparation of textual and audiovisual materials as on collective work in class.

All assignments must be done at home before coming to class to ensure the quality of the lessons.

Assessment in January (20%): non-exempting written exam based on a text which has not been discussed in class, and/or questions in close connection with the themes covered throughout Term 1, including materials not discussed in class.


Assessment in June (80%):

Written exam (counting for half the June grade) based on the study of material seen in class (text syllabus and video links) as well as unseen material related to the subject. The exam may also include a listening comprehension in relation to the themes covered in class.

Oral exam (counting for half the June grade) consisting in individual preparation of readings (TBD) assigned by the teachers.

Information for the oral exam:

  • Students will have to answer questions about the exam readings. Preparation and personal research are crucial : names, places, words or phrases that are not familiar should be looked up, and students are expected to bring the results of this documentation to the exam.
  • Students may also be asked to provide information about the authors of the texts.
  • They must use (relevant) keywords and concepts (especially, but not exclusively, those discussed in class)
  • Students must bring a paper version of all readings to the exam (which can -- or should -- be annotated). They can also bring notes (on paper -- electronic devices are not allowed).
 

Students who have a grade below 7/20 will not be allowed to take the oral exam. If so, they will be graded solely on the basis of the written exam.

The modalities for the August exam are the same as for June.



This course is part of a teaching unit ("Unité d'enseignement," or UE) which is subject to the principle of the "note absorbante," which means that the student having obtained a mark below 8/20 (7 or less) for one of the learning activities ("activités d'apprentissage," or AA) will receive a failing grade for the entire unit and will have to retake the failed AA in the second session regardless of the mathematical average of the two AA grades.
