Learning unit contents

The main aim of this course is to improve students' level of Dutch through a grammatical and translational analysis of the Dutch canon. The latter refers to a selection of key events, personalities and themes in Dutch history, considered essential for understanding the development of national identity.

Topics covered

  • Definition and concept of the canon: What is the canon? How is it constituted, and why are certain periods, people or events considered more important than others?
  • What is the relationship between the canon and identity formation? The link between the canon and the construction of the collective identity of the Netherlands will be examined. This part will invite students to reflect on the role of historical narratives in creating a sense of national belonging.
  • Reception and debate around the canon: How has the canon been received in the Netherlands?

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Analyze and critique the concepts discussed in class.
  • Reflexion on identity discourses in the Low Countries.
  • Improve your command of Dutch.
  • Introduction to translation.
