Learning unit contents

Communication is an essential component of scientists' work throughout their professional careers. Indeed, they are required to disseminate the results of their research (both orally and in writing), to write reports, to seek funding, to synthesize information, etc. This course covers two commonly used techniques for communicating scientific results: oral presentations and poster presentations. After a theoretical introduction, each student will be required to present a seminar and create a poster based on a recent scientific article that they will have selected through a bibliographic search (which can be conducted as part of a documentation course).

NOTE:

As part of your university education, you can legally dispose of the materials made available to you (pdf Power Points, videos, podcasts, etc.) protected by copyright. These materials are intended only to be used by students as part of their studies at the University of Liège. No other use or distribution is authorized, under penalty of constituting a violation of the law of June 30, 1994 relating to copyright. If the resources were to be freely accessible on the web, the person responsible would be exposed to legal proceedings.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, students will have learned how to:

- prepare an oral presentation
- prepare clear, efficient, and attractive slides
- prepare a poster
- develop critical thinking with regard to scientific literature

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The knowledge of PowerPoint (or equivalent software) is an advantage.

Understanding English is essential, as scientific papers are published in English.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures, analyses of posters, preparation of an oral and a poster presentation.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Additional information:

The course is organised during the 2nd quadrimester. Theoretical lectures (3 half days) are followed by student presentations.

Student's presence is compulsory for theoretical lectures, a minimum of 3 presentation sessions (half days) and a poster session (attendance will be recorded).

Course materials and recommended or required readings

PowerPoint slides and complementary readings will be available in pdf format (online learning platform eCampus).
An international scientific publication (10-14 pages, in english), selected by the student from an exhaustive list, will have to be read and analysed.

Exam(s) in session

Out-of-session test(s)

Additional information:

The assessment is based on the students' seminars (oral: 70%, poster: 30%), and the participation to the discussions during the seminars given by the other students (bonus-malus).

This assessment is the one that will be considered for the first session. So there is no examination in May-June.
In case of fail, student will be asked, for the second session, to do the same work on another scientific paper.

Work placement(s)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The student must be available on 4,5,6/2/2025 pm; et du 31/3 au 11/4/2025 pm (except the 4/4)

Students can search their paper and additional resources during the course DOCU0033-2 Training in the exploitation of documentary resources or  DOCU0460-1 Training in the exploitation of documentary resources (upgrade).

The articles are chosen by the students during the first quadrimestre. They are invited to read the article to check that it is appropriate before the first class.

Improvements are made to the course each year based on the evolution of knowledge, and formal and informal feedback from students.
