Learning unit contents

This course consists of about ten theoretical lectures related to the analysis of qualitative data in social sciences. Most of the treated data are extracted from surveys. The studied statistical techniques are logistic regression, log-linear models and their extensions to deal with ordinal variables. These tools will mainly be used to analyse contingency tables : the goal will be to detect relevant associations between the involved concepts and to interpret them. Examples of increasing difficulty will be proposed. Practicals will be organised to enable students to apply these techniques with the SAS software. A project requiring the analysis of some aspects of the themes tackled by a national or an international survey (with a publicly available database) will extend and complete the training.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To understand and to apply the basic statistical tools required by the analysis of qualitative data from surveys in social sciences ; to learn how to communicate the results of such analyses.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

It is assumed that students have a basic training in probability theory and in statistical inference (SOCI1241-1) and are familiar with the use of Excel, JASP or JMP (INFO0818-1).

-- Co-requisite: a basic training in the use of the SAS software (STAT0806-1) is required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Practicals aim at performing the statistical analyses studied during the theoretical lectures with the SAS software. Other examples will also be proposed to consolidate the understanding of the studied techniques.

Additional information:

The course is organized during the 2nd term: they will mix face-to-face and remote sessions, as well as podcasts. The written report associated with the project serving as the basis for the oral examination (see below) must be submitted before the end of the second term.

Additional information:

The assessement is made during an oral exam. The starting point will be a written report describing the analyses undertaken by the student with the SAS software to get insight in some of the themes tackled by a national or an international survey (with a publicly available database). The report is expected by the end of the 2nd term. The different techniques studied during the course should be used and so illustrated. A student won't be allowed to take the exam if he/she did not transmit the above mentioned written report at the prescribed time and in the required format.
