Learning unit contents
The sociology of work analyzes contemporary transformations in the world of work. One of these changes is the increasing importance of managerial logics, structured around certain values and logics (flexibility, adaptability, quantitative nature, etc.), which are changing the language used in the field of work, the tasks carried out and the skills expected of workers by employers. This course will use a critical approach to management to define and deconstruct these changes.
The course is divided into four chapters.
The first chapter focuses on capitalism, defining it and highlighting its stakes, particularly from the point of view of the logics of domination that structure society and, a fortiori, the world of work. The second chapter sets out the way in which management sciences and management have been criticised by certain types of research, particularly sociological research. Then, in the third chapter, we shall see how management tools have spread throughout the world of work, in particular through the logic of quantification. These are as present in the private sector as they are in the public sector, particularly through issues of New Public Management. Finally, the last chapter will provide an opportunity to look back at practices implemented in companies, through various case studies (ecological issues, gender equality, teleworking, etc.), in order to deconstruct their managerial character.
