Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
This research method seminar aims to:
- familiarize students with the social science research process (learning the different stages through homework);
- provide students with the methodological tools needed to build a research approach in all its aspects;
- accompany students in the conduct of a first scientific research in the social sciences.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this seminar, the student will be able to:
- Identify a concrete object to be analysed;
- Formulate correctly (criteria seen during the seminar) a starting question and a research question;
- Choose a theoretical approach consistent with the concerned object;
- Research and use literature consistent with the theoretical approach;
- Collect relevant field data;
- Formulate hypotheses (criteria seen during the seminar);
- Analyse collected field data;
- Write a document describing the results of the research carried out, in accordance with the instructions given by the teacher.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
An introductory course in the humanities is highly recommended. If not, the student will be able to update himself/herself through various readings (see with the teachers).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The seminar is organized around:
- Video clips accompanied by more "ex cathedra" sessions for theoretical input;
- Individual assignments with individual (eCampus) and group (in-session) feedbacks;
- Two individual student coachings are also provided during the year.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Blended learning
Further information:
The seminar is given in a hybrid way : video clips will enable students to prepare for the face-to-face sessions, which are designed to clarify important elements of the subject and answer students' questions. The sessions will be recorder in order for the students who cannot attend to be able to follow them afterwards.
Course materials and recommended or required readings
Platform(s) used for course materials:
- eCampus
Further information:
Course materials :
- Slides of the different courses ;
- Vidéo clips;
- Recordings of the sessions;
- Documents and other resources (see Ecampus);
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- Remote
written exam
Written work / report
Further information:
The evaluation will be based on the various assignments handed in throughout the year. Each assignment will be marked as follows:
- Assignment 1: /10
- Assignment 2: /10
- Assignment 3: /20
- Assignment 4: /60
The total of these grades will be reduced to a grade out of 20, which will constitute the final grade for the seminar.
Access to Assignment 4 is conditional on the submission of at least one assignment from Assignments 1, 2 and 3, AND participation in at least one of the two individual coaching sessions during the year.
Absorbing grade principle: students must achieve at least 24/60 in Assignment 4 to pass the seminar. In the event of a lower grade, the final grade in the first session will be the grade for Assignment 4 only.
Organisation of the second session for students who have obtained a grade of less than 10/20 for the seminar:
- If the student has failed Assignment 4, a corrected version must be submitted.
- If the student has failed one or more of assignments 1, 2 or 3, a reflective practice paper must be submitted for the assignment(s) concerned.
The new grade for the assignment(s) submitted in the second session replaces the grade for the assignment(s) from the first session, and the same weighting as in the first session is applied to the other assignments and any internship. The principle of absorbing grade continues to apply.
If the student fails again in the second session, he or she will have to re-enrol in the seminar the following year and take all the assessments again.
For students doing an internship in lieu of a professional occupation (see 'Internship' section), the final seminar grade is calculated as follows:
- Assignment 1: /10
- Assignment 2: /10
- Assignment 3: /20
- Assignment 4: /40
- Internship report: /10
- Grade awarded by the internship supervisor using the assessment grid completed by him/her: /10
The total of these grades will be reduced to a grade out of 20, which will constitute the final grade for the seminar.
The submission of Assignment 4 is subject to the joint submission of the intersnhip report and the internship supervisor's assessment grid. The seminar cannot therefore be validated if the student has not completed the internship and submitted the documents required for assessment.
If a student fails the seminar but passes the internship part of the course, he or she will have to re-register for the seminar the following year and retake the various assignments, but will not have to start over a new internship. The grade awarded for the internship in the previous year will be retained and used to calculate the final grade for the following year, under the same conditions.
Work placement(s)
For students enrolled in the 60 ECTS master, the successful completion of this research seminar is conditioned by the actual exercice of a regular professional activity.
Only a valid and signed certificate of employment from the employer will be considered sufficient proof of regular employment. This certificate must be delivered by 31 October at the latest. In the absence of a regular professional activity, the student enrolled in the Master in Work Sciences 60 ECTS must complete a long-term internship (60 days) in a host organisation. This is a prerequisite for crediting the research seminar in a professional situation. You can find the rules of this internship through this link: https://www.student.fass.uliege.be/cms/c_11983137/fr/reglement-stages-st60-24-25?preview=true&details=true
