Learning unit contents

This course aims to introduce students to the main principles of orthopedagogical intervention to optimize the development and well-being of persons with disabilities. The selected angle will consider these people in different periods of their lives (Life-Span Perspective) and try to understand the factors influencing their adaptation to various environmental situations. It will include the analysis of the needs of persons with disabilities and taking into account their evolution.

Topics covered include early intervention, diagnosis announcement, empowerment, person-centred approaches, intervention in schools, intervention with children with autism spectrum disorders, dynamic assessment, education in emotional, relational and sexual life for adults with intellectual disabilities, and the care and service network. Themes may vary from one year to another.

Practical work includes :

  • Problem-based learning session which aims at giving the students the opportunity to think about how to elaborate a global intervention project taking count of the environment and of the specific needs of disabled children, to develop his knowledge of the disability-related network and to develop his ability to interact with the field actors.
  • A peer mentoring setting involving collaborative group work with a student involved in a project as part of the Professional Development of Psychologists and Educationalists: Professionalizing Practice course (YSEM0004-1) throughout the academic year.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course and practical work, students will be able to consider an intervention project adapted to the circumstances and needs of people with disabilities. They will have knowledge of professional networks.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Prerequisite and co-requisite units are presented within each program

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The program provides multiple learning methods to enable students to grasp the main principles of the intervention on people with disability or at risk. It is therefore proposed theoretical contents, presentations by professionals specialized in some specific interventions, videos, a working group, and problem-based learning sequence (PBL). Finally, students will work in collaboration with a 3rd year bachelor student in the analysis of disability situations and in the implementation of interventions (field observations, research, intervention and evaluation of its effectiveness)

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Blended learning

Additional explanations:

For psychology students:

The final grade is based on a written exam and an oral presentation of group work. Students must obtain a minimum grade of 10/20 for each part. If a student fails one of the two parts, the final grade will correspond to failing grade. If a student fails both parts, the final grade will be the average of the two failing grades. If the student passes both parts, the final grade will correspond to the average of the two grades. In the second session, students must only resit the part or parts they failed.

For speech therapy students:

Taking into account the different credits associated with this course between cohorts of students in speech therapy and psychology, participation in the group work is optional for students in speech therapy. They may therefore choose between two evaluation methods:

If the student chooses to take part in the group work, the final grade will be based on a written exam and an oral presentation of the group work. Each part (whether it be a pass or a fail) will count for half the points in the final grade.

If the student chooses only to sit the written exam, then the final grade will correspond to the grade obtained in the written exam only.

In all cases (psychology and speech therapy students), participation in the problem-based learning sessions is compulsory. Absence at the exercise sessions will lead to a 2-point penalty being deducted from the final grade as well as completion of additional work on the theme covered during the session.
