Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course follows Quantum Physics I

The course is structured along 3 main chapters :
  0. Mathematical tools: the tensor product of Hilbert spaces and of vector kets
1. The spin of a particule
2. N-particle systems and indiscernability, bosons - fermions
3. Fine and hyperfine structure of hydrogen atoms. The definition of the second.

Exercice learning activities are scheduled to illustrate all theoretical notions covered by the 3 chapters. Content of these additional learning activities : Bell inequalities and hidden variable theories, quantum cryptography.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To understand to fundamental laws of quantum mechanics and what makes it different from classical mechanics.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Quantum Physics I

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The teaching method is the ex cathedra mode. The essential of the course is presented with use of video data slides, completed with the use of the blackboard for the technical developments.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face.

Course materials and recommended or required readings

The copy of all slides displayed during the lessons are available online.

The well-known book of Quantum Mechanics, I and II, by C. Cohen-Tannoudji, B. Diu and F. Laloë (Hermann and Wiley-Vch, Paris, 2005), is a recommended reading.

Written examination (theory + exercices). Weighting: 60/40.
