Teaching in the second semester
Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Mechanics of particle
- Language of Physique : basic quantity, dimensions, units
- Kinématic : Décription of the motions (acceleration, speed, position and the motions rectilinears, harmonic oscillatories, circulars, balistics, relatives)
- Dynamics: Understand the motion causes (forces, Newton laws, forces budget, fictional forces)
- Energie: Use for the description of motions and understanding its causes more rapidely (work, conservative forces, potential energy, kinetic énergy, energy conservation, power)
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
- Learning of fundamental physics laws.
- Initiation to scientific reasoning: translation of the situation into formal elements, determination of the assumption (orders of magnitude and approximations), choice of the development method, resolution of the problem, solution analysis and interpretation
- Read and interpret a graphic (infer some informations)
- Know and verify the hypothesis for application of the loi or property
- Use correctly the specific vocabulary
- Give the units and dimensions of the quantities
- Transform and make sensitivity analysis of a formula or relationship
- Remake reasoning already presented during the lectures
- Carry informations over to a graphic or a diagram
- Apply the theory to an original situation
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
1) Mathematics addressed during secondary school and during the training sessions:
- 1st and 2nd degree equations
- Linear system
- Trigonometric (sin, cos, tg,..) and exponential functions
- Simple derivative
- 10 exponents
- Vectorial algebra (projection, summation, product,...)
- Vocabulary accurancy
- Right utilisation of the linking words
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Teaching method:
- Presentation of laws and theorem and preparation to theoritical questions during theoritical courses
- Presentation and resolution of exercices during tutorials
In addition to the remediation organised within the course, the Physics MOOC, developed at ULiège and dealing with mechanics, could constitute an interesting additional resource for students who have difficulties with this subject.
The MOOC is available throughout the academic year free of charge. However, it is necessary to register on the FUN platform in order to access it.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Additional information:
Preparatory course: in common with the Mathematic one
Theoretical courses : 28h
Practical Works : 28h
Remediation: 8h
Course materials and recommended or required readings
Lecture notes and slides Physics for scientists and engineers - Serway - 3d Edition - Saunders-Philadelphia
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )
Additional information:
In case of Code Yellow: The exam is organized in a written exam in person at the May/June and August/September sessions. It is held each time according to the same modalities. It includes a "theory" part and a "problems" part corresponding to the resolution of numerical exercises.
In the event of a Code Orange: The exam as described above will be conducted in the computer room in small groups.
In the event of a Code Red: The exam will be taken remotely on a computer with the answers to the open-ended questions transmitted by scan and the answers to the automated questions (QRM, numerical values to be found, etc.) encoded.
No partial exemption for theory or problems will be granted for the second session.
