Learning unit contents
This module approaches the various anatomical, histological, biochemical, physiological, physiopathological aspects, and embryological of the metabolic and endocrine systems, as well as the nutrition and elements of dietetics.
At the anatomical level, the knowledge of the various elements, as well as their mutual relations, is of a considerable importance in the medical practice. Know how to localize elements, touch them, recognize them on radiographies,... is common in a doctor's career.
At the histological level, the student will learn to know the microscopic aspect of all the organs and the relation between this aspect and the functions of these. He will learn during practical classes the criteria allowing him to establish a differential diagnosis and to interpret the aspects of these organs on microtome cuts.
As regards the biochemistry and the physiology, the main ways taught previously in general biochemistry and which assure the metabolism of the main classes of molecules (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids) will be integrated. Their coordinated regulations will be envisaged through frequent and general problems. The major principles of physiopathology concerning the metabolism will be reviewed.The ways of synthesis of the thyroid hormones, surrénaliennes, pituitary and pancreatic will be examined, as well as the mechanisms which regulate their synthesis and their liberation. The homeostasic role and the regulator of the endocrine system and its interactions with the nervous system will be envisaged, at the same time as the synergic, opposing and/or lenient effects of the various hormones.
At the embryological level, from the moment of the fertilization, the genetic material coding for the future human being is constituted in a definitive way. The student will have to understand the various steps of the organization and the differentiation of tissues of the embryo then of the foetus. The knowledge of these mechanisms, following one another harmoniously, will allow to seize how are constituted the deformations which we will detect later in the pregnancy or at the birth.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Such as, in particular, in a not exhaustive way :
- Know the anatomy of the endocrine system integrated into the study of the genital anatomy (ovaries, testicles), of the digestive anatomy (liver, pancreas) and of the urinary anatomy (suprarenal gland).
- Know the mammary gland.
- know the pituitary gland, with distinction between its antérior and posterior part
- Know the thyroid and the parathyroid glands.
- Know the pancreas and the pancreatic-duodenal crossroads.
- Know suprarenal glands.
- Know how to recognize the areas of projections of the endocrine glands by the cutaneous level.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This Module is multidisciplinar (based on different theoretical courses in different disciplines).
Practical works (MEDE0124 and MEDE0125) and Problem-based seminars (APPR0141) complete the practical and clinical aspects.
