By "new grammars", we mean the musical languages that emerged at the end of the 19th century: "art music" born in the wake of dodecaphony, "popular music", musics associated with new media (cinema, television, video games, social networks...), "world music"...
In fact, the course is devoted to the history of pop/rock music since the mid-1950s. The different currents are approached chronologically, with the focus on emblematic works that are placed in the social, economic and technological context in which they were born.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this teaching unit, students will be able to:
- Give a musical, aesthetic and chronological overview of the history of rock, drawing on skills acquired in courses in history, art history, film history or literature of the same periods.
- Identify and characterize the specifics of the main rock genres.
- Describe and, if necessary, recognize certain works or styles when listening to them.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
None. You don't need to know anything about music to take this course.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Face-to-face course. The professorial monologue is interrupted by videos, auditions and illustrations.

The course follows the structure of the book entitled "Une histoire musicale du rock", Paris, Fayard, 2011. This is not an invitation to purchase. The book is available at the "UD des sciences historiques", and can be made available to you if you require further information or wish to verify certain data.

- Musical auditions. The aim is to identify a work, a composer, a group, a form or a period. The excerpts played on the exam have been heard in class and are available on ecampus.
