Learning unit contents

In-depth study of a major classical author, a work, a period, a genre or a particular theme in Italian literature from its origins to the 16th century.

In 2024-2025, the course will be dedicated to Francesco Guicciardini, with a focus on his Ricordi.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

- situate in time the authors and texts covered in the course (cultural, historical, geopolitical context) ;

- list and characterise the works considered ;

- compare the author and his or her works with tradition and contemporaries;

- give an account of the posterity of the work or the author ;

- give an account of the main themes dealt with in the works;

- analyse, paraphrase and comment on extracts read;

- trace the manuscript and printed tradition of the texts studied;

- characterise the language of the authors;

- present this knowledge in correct Italian.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

In-depth knowledge of the Italian language and the history of Italian literature.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Course ex cathedra, in italian.

Optional complementary activities aimed at developing students' oral skills may be organised (conferences, cultural outings, films, conversation tables). Organisational details will be communicated to students in due course.

It is essential that students obtain this printed edition of Guicciardini's Ricordi and take it with them to class.
