Learning unit contents

This course presents a general and chronological overview of Spanish literature from its origins to the late 20th century. The course will be illustrated by reading and commenting on extracts from representative works (in French translation or bilingual editions).

By the end of the semester, you will have mastered a series of notions relating to Spanish literary, cultural and political history, which we will explore through a selection of readings from different periods: the chanson de geste Cantar de mío Cid, didactic short stories by don Juan Manuel, the Diálogo de la lengua by Juan de Valdés, The Limping Devil by Luis Vélez de Guevara, fables by Tomás de Iriarte, realist and naturalist short stories by Leopoldo Alas or Emilia Pardo Bazán, poems by Federico García Lorca and Le Grand Voyage by Jorge Semprún (this list may be subject to minor changes). All texts will be made available to students on eCampus in due course, in bilingual versions, with the exception of Semprún's novel, which students are expected to purchase themselves.

Mastery of the Spanish language is an essential prerequisite for reading Hispanic classics. Other courses offered by the University of Liège's Spanish team will enable you, in a few months' time, to tackle the reading of complex texts, with the help of the dictionary. This history of literature course is taught in French, however, as the vast majority of students are still unfamiliar with the Spanish language and we will be reading and commenting on texts dating back several centuries

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • explain the cultural significance and main characteristics of the texts studied;
  • be able to define clearly and precisely the key concepts of Spanish cultural, literary or political history that the texts we read will lead us to discover;
  • recognize the most common or historically important poetic forms and genres in Spanish literature;
  • chronologically place (albeit approximately) some Spanish literary genres;
  • know around ten important dates in the history of Spanish literature, and the events associated with them.
