Learning unit contents
After a historical section tracing the major stages in the development of the Italian language, the course gives a general overview of the language in synchronicity.
Phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon are analysed from a descriptive perspective, comparing the norm with the actual usage of Italian speakers.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, students should be able to :
- retrace the major stages in the development of the Italian language ;
- master Italian linguistic terminology
- describe how the Italian language works (phonetics, nominal and verbal morphology, lexicon, syntax) ;
- define and illustrate with examples the notions and concepts envisaged;
- analyse a linguistic phenomenon and relate it to a notion or concept;
- describe the relationship between norm and usage;
- express themselves in Italian on the subject of the course, both orally and in writing.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
A good command of the grammatical and lexical structures of the Italian language.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Ex cathedra theory classes.
Optional complementary activities aimed at developing students' oral skills may be organised (conferences, cultural outings, films, conversation tables). Organisational details will be communicated to students in due course.
