Learning unit contents
The student is introduced to historical linguistics of French by a course of historical phonetics (i.e. the study about the changes of the sounds composing a word from its origin until now).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
To know the main mechanisms of evolution of the sounds and to be able to reconstitute the phonetic evolution of french words.

- Historical phonetics lectures (M.-G. Boutier), and practical classes with phonetics exercises (in charge : Léonore Dubru).
- Exercises on WebCT .
- It is essential to take part actively in the exercises in order to integrate the course. Practical classes are compulsory.

The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 40% of the June final grade if > or = 10/20 (the mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20).
