Learning unit contents

The course focuses on assessment techniques and logopaedic care for people with severe language disorders and complex communication needs.

1. Communication functions and partners

  • Theoretical aspects
  • Relation to complex communication needs
2. Prerequisites for early communication in neurodevelopmental disorders

3. Neurodevelopmental disorders: intellectual development disorder and autism spectrum disorder

The neurolinguistic aspects of each disorder (linking cerebral particularities with specific language and cognitive profiles) will be addressed.

4. Motor impairments

  • Cerebral Palsy - CMI and CPOE
5. Sensory impairments

  • Visual impairment and deafblindness
6. Assessment and intervention tools

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this programme, students will :

- be familiar with the specific features of language or communication disorders in the various disabilities targeted ;

- be able to propose a language and communication assessment adapted to the characteristics of the disabilities targeted;

- be able to construct a therapeutic project targeting language and communication in the various disabilities targeted;

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

- Theoretical course

- Reading of texts and resource documents

- Clinical vignettes will be regularly proposed and discussed during the course:

  • preparation and presentation by groups of 2-3 students (depending on the number enrolled) at the beginning of the course.
  • These vignettes will be prepared with reference to the resource documents available on e-campus (theoretical slides, 'assessment tools' slides and articles).
