Dutch linguistics II
This course will deal with two modules of Dutch linguistics.
The first module focuses on word formation. We will look in depth at the notions of derivation and composition on the basis of theoretical content, popularization articles, scientific articles and the analysis of numerous examples. At the end of this module, students will complete an assignment based on a corpus research.
The second module focuses on the general theme of languages in contact. Based on scientific articles, it will focus on the notion of borrowing. Which languages has Dutch borrowed words from? Which languages has Dutch given words to? Why do we borrow words from other languages? How do borrowed words fit into their target language? To explore this theme, students will carry out a field study ('Project leenwoorden') in which they will observe the use of borrowed words in Dutch-speaking public spaces. This fieldwork will serve as the basis for a written project.
These two projects (corpus research and field study) will enable them to acquire the methodological foundations of scientific research in linguistics.
Dutch language practice III
This class aims at enhancing the basic linguistic skills in order for students to reach a B2+ or C1 CEFR level in the Dutch langage.
More specifically, this class is based on :
- Complex listening tasks in which students are required to show in-depth comprehension of the news, short documentaries, interviews, etc. taken from the Dutch (or Flemish) press or Dutch (Flemish) institutional websites.
-Short written assignments and class presentations in which students develop a critical stance towards the topics broached in the videos or present closely related topics

Dutch linguistics II
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- analyze the morphological structure of Dutch words ;
- identify the processes of derivation and composition;
- understand and use a scientific study of Dutch morphology;
- carry out corpus research on morphological structures specific to Dutch;
- understand borrowing processes between languages;
- conduct a field study;
- understand and use a scientific study on the notion of language in contact;
- write a research report in academic Dutch.
Dutch language practice III
This course brings students to:
- understand, summarize and comment - both in writing and via short talks in class - upon the societal issues and cultural features discussed in the videos selected by the instructor.
- enhance word choice in order to achieve a proficient level of language in their productions.
- transcribe speeches and interviews in consistent language.
- make use of appropriate vocabulary and register in order to express their views and arguments on various topics with subtlety.

Dutch linguistics II
There are no formal prerequisites for this course but having earned the ECTS credits for the courses of Dutch Language Proficiency II and of Dutch Linguistics I is an asset.

The course includes formal lectures which will be as interactive as possible on the one hand and practical sessions on the other.
Dutch language practice III
Listening and transcribing tasks are organised every two weeks in the language lab (L3).
The rest of the classes are devoted to:
- Short individual ou in-group class presentations relating to the topics first broached in media extracts.
- The collective revision of the extracts transcribed individually, as well as to vocabulary extension exercises and writing assignments.
- Grammatical brush-up on request.

- Dutch language proficiency III: 50%
This teaching unit is subject to the principle of the absorbing mark, which means that if a mark lower than 8/20 is attributed to one of the learning activities (LA), it becomes the overall mark of the UE. Only the failed LA will be retaken in the second session.

- corpus research (morfology) - 30%

- 30% of the final grade obtained via continuous assessment (participation in the weekly tasks and debates, quality of class presentations and command of the Dutch language).
- 70% of the final grade : written exam organised in June in the language lab.
