Learning unit contents
The aim of this course is to develop students' receptive and productive skills, and bring them into contact with the Dutch language and culture. To achieve this objective, the college is based on several modules, namely:
(i) compulsory pronunciation and conversation classes,
(ii) argumentative writing,
(iii) lexical enrichment (manual Thematische woordenschat voor anderstaligen),
(iv) organization of a cultural activity (visit to a Flemish or Dutch town)
(v) composition of an individual portfolio.
In terms of content, the classes will focus on the presentation of different varieties of oral language (Tussentaal, Straattaal, Jongerentaal, Murks...) and the analysis of features specific to the oral register (e.g. the use of modal particles). Discussion of these will be based on authentic documents and scientific articles.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this course, the students will be able:
- to list and describe the characteristics of various varieties of Dutch;
- write a structured and coherent essay in Dutch;
- to understand specialized texts in Dutch
- conduct a natural conversation in Dutch

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This course is based on interactive lectures (1 h/week) and exercises (1 h/week).
Mandatory conversation and pronunciation classes will be organized in conjunction with the lecture sessions. Students who fail to attend 80% of these conversation and pronunciation classes will not be allowed to take the exam.
As part of the course, students will visit a Flemish or Dutch city. This visit will serve as the basis for a poster to be presented in class. More specific instructions will be given in the first class.
For the oral exam, students prepare a learning portfolio in which they show how they came into contact with the Dutch language. More specific instructions will be given at the first class.

Assessment will include a written and an oral examination.
The written exam will include a vocabulary test and the redaction an argumentative text (formulating an opinion on a subject and giving arguments);
The oral exam will cover:
- the presentation and discussion of the individual portfolio
- the discussion of a cultural activity
- the discussion of a scientific article seen in class
- written exam - vocabulary: 10%
- written exam - argumentative text: 40%
- cultural activity: 10% of final grade
- oral exam: 40%.
