Learning unit contents
The course focuses on the analysis of one or more authors, prose writers or poets. The chosen works will be read in the original language and accompanied by a linguistic-grammatical, stylistic and historical-cultural analysis. The texts will be read in the light of a thematic path dedicated to a transversal theme, in order to deepen knowledge of the characteristics of their literary genre, to highlight specific aspects of Roman culture, to examine a literary topos or to shed light on the literary practice of a specific historical period.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The course aims to provide students with the skills necessary for an independent reading and exegesis of texts by Latin authors. At the end of the course, students will be able to translate the texts studied and to propose a commentary which will take into account grammatical, stylistic, historical and cultural aspects. They will be able to read literary texts as useful sources for a better understanding of their historical and cultural context.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Knowledge achieved in block 2 as part of the courses on Latin language and authors.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
During the course, the teacher will translate and comment selected passages; however, the translation and activities connected to the linguistic, stylistic and historical analysis will require the participation of the students, who will be expected to:
- during the course: translate and analyze short passages, highlighting the phonetic, prosodic or metric, morphological, syntactic, lexical aspects, rhetorical figures and structures, stylistic peculiarities, as well as aspects related to the author's literary practice and his historical-cultural context;
- at home: a. deepen what has been done during the course by reading articles proposed by the teacher, b. prepare a written work on specific aspects concerning the analysed author(s), c. proceed with the translation and independent commentary of the passages indicated by the teacher.

Written homework will be marked.
Oral examination at the end of the year : reading, translation and commentary of a text red during the course and of a text prepared at home (for this second text, the student will prepare also an introduction to the text). Assessment of the ability of the student : 1. to translate and justify grammatically his translation; 2. to refer to the bibliography; 3. to use personally the methods and the techniques learned during the course.
The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 25% of the June final mark if > or = 10/20. The mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20 and the final exam will then be cumulative.
