Learning unit contents
The course includes two parts .
First semester : reading of a set of Latin classical texts with a special attention to the linguistics features of the texts (revision of the essential notions of Latin grammar). It will include various exercises (translation and grammatical anlaysis).
A series of texts illustrating a theme, a character or a classical author. Seneca, Lucretius, Titus Livy, the origins of Rome, Horatius, Seneca, Vergil, the emperor Julian as seen by Ammianus Marcellinus, the satires of Juvenal.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
To show the various audiences concerned how a commentary, whether historical or literary, can only be based on direct contact with text, hence on a precise understanding and rigorous translation, based on a grammatical analysis.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Good knowledge of basic Latin, i.e. the contents of a common school grammar book(e.g., A.-M. BOXUS et M. LAVENCY, Clauis, Grammaire latine pour la lecture des auteurs, Nouvelle édition, avec la collaboration de D. LONGREE et G. SCHOUPPE, Louvain-la-Neuve,2014 et/ou G. FRANÇOIS, Grammaire latine, Liège) or of a Latin method (e.g. FAMERIE - BODSON- DUBUISSON, published by Nathan) and a vocabulary book (for instance by G. ETIENNE [approximately 2000 words]).

Reference works: a set of texts, as well as vocabulary lists, are available online (WebCT) every year.
Students should also obtain a Latin-French dictionary (recommended: F. GAFFIOT, Le grand Gaffiot. French-Latin dictionary (Hachette) [full version]) and a Latin grammar (recommended : A.-M. BOXUS et M. LAVENCY, Clauis, Grammaire latine pour la lecture des auteurs, Nouvelle édition, avec la collaboration de D. LONGREE et G. SCHOUPPE, Louvain-la-Neuve,2014 and
G. FRANÇOIS, Grammaire latine, Liège).

Additional information:
Written exams in January and in June.
In January : interrogation on the texts studied during the first Semester; various exercices (translation and grammatical analysis); 40% of the final mark.
In June :
- interrogation on the texts studied during the second semester and translation of an unknown text (60 % of the final mark).
The mark from the written midterm exam in January will count for 40% of the June final mark if > or = 10/20. The marks will have no effect on the final grade if they don't reach 10/20 and the final exam will then be cumulative.
