Learning unit contents

The course aims to analyze Latin morphology, syntax and vocabulary, with an in-depth study of the morphological and syntactic structures of Latin.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, students will:

- have acquired knowledge of the morphosyntactic structures and vocabulary of classical Latin needed to independently read and translate the authors' texts;

- have gained basic knowledge of the historical evolution of the Latin language and of its different linguistic registers;

- be able to translate short prose texts of increasing difficulty by classical authors.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The course has no prerequisites.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

After a theoretical introduction by the teacher, students will be invited to participate in interactive activities. The exercises will include:

- exercises aimed at understanding the functioning of morphological and syntactical structures;

- translation exercises, from Latin to French and vice versa.

« LECTURE CURSIVE » : The course foresees the  reading of one or more prose texts. The reading, translation and grammatical commentary of these texts are mainly intended as topic of independent study, however excerpts from the text will also be analyzed as part of the course.

The course foresees the study of the material provided during the course (texts, exercises), of a manual of Latin grammar (A.-M. Boxus, M. Lavency, Clauis, Grammaire latine pour la lecture des auteurs, Nouvelle édition, avec la collaboration de D. Longrée et G. Schouppe, Louvain-la-Neuve 2014) and of a textbook for the assimilation of Latin vocabulary (G. Etienne, Cahier de vocabulaire latin, 20th ed., Liège 2011). In addition, students will be expected to use the Latin-French dictionary F. GAFFIOT, Dictionnaire latin-français, Paris, Hachette, 2000 (and re-ed.).

Written and oral exam.

In January: written exam on the topics of the first term and the chosen Latin text (cursive).

In case this first exam is succesful (= or > 10/20), the grade obtained in January will count for 40% of the overall passing mark in June. If the obtained mark is insufficient (< 10/20), it will not interfere with the overall mark; in this case, the exam in June will cover all topics treated during the course.
