Learning unit contents

The Interuniversity Chair of Practical Islamology (CIIP), created by the six universities of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation in partnership with the Institute for the Promotion of Training on Islam, was born from a long political-academic reflection conducted after numerous tragedies in the European space. The latter has experienced strong tensions between the political and religious worlds over the last two centuries, tensions that echoed the slow democratization of knowledge. In this spirit, the CIIP project was initially inspired by the work of Mohamed Arkoun who was keen to combat what he called "institutionalized ignorance".

One of the essential missions of the Chair consists of "the reflexive, critical analysis of Arab-Muslim thought in its historical and contemporary dimensions". The Chair also aims to promote "a teaching of religious fact free from the dogmatic enclosures inherited from the past".

The Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Liège, holder of the chair for the next academic year, has the honor of welcoming Professors Paul Fenton (Université Paris IV-Sorbonne) and Jean-Baptiste Brenet (Université de Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne), who will give courses between November 28 and December 14, 2024. The courses will be preceded by an inaugural conference.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The general meaning of the activities of this chair is to illustrate the place that Islamic studies can occupy in the intellectual debate at university level. Students who have attended the lessons will now be able, at least on the particular theme of the year, to describe the place occupied by Islamic studies and the nature of their contribution.
