Foreign students are expected to master the French language first, as several papers and results of bibliographical research are to be turned in during the academic year and at the end of it.

The four Heuristics courses contribute to the establishment of a real progression in the training of history students. The possibility of following them in parallel in B2 offers students the opportunity to discover the specificities and methods of historical research for the four periods (discovery of the different types of sources and literature specific to each period; initiation to bibliographical research and the use of the main working tools). In B3, each student will thus be able to choose, with full knowledge of the facts, the two periods in which he wishes to specialise and to carry out his first major work independently (including the TFC).

At the end of these heuristics courses, students will have acquired some research automatisms, exercised their critical thinking and improved the quality of their scientific writing.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The student will be able to find his or her way through the printed material on contemporary history (especially that of Belgium) on his or her own at the end of the quadrimester:

  • writing a systematic and exhaustive bibliography (printed sources, secondary literature and working tools);
  • writing a biographical note;
  • mastery of the heuristic reflexes essential to any research in Belgian official sources and in the digitised historical press.
The student will also be able to apply the basic rules of historical criticism to the reading of sources and works (books or articles) that will be proposed in the context of a text commentary or the writing of a critical account. 

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Working knowledge of French, both oral and written.
Reading capacity of English and, possibly, notions of Dutch.
The knowledge and skills required by the courses Practical Introduction to Research in History (HIST0082), Notions of Historical Criticism (HIST0055) and Contemporary history (HIST0031) are assumed to have been acquired.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course will alternate theoretical and practical sessions. The exercises proposed may consist of individual or group work and lead to the production of written texts.
Compulsory tutoring sessions will also be organised (schedule to be specified).

Students will be assessed in the following way:

  • work to be handed in during the term: 30%;
  • written examination: 70%;
Main evaluation criteria:

  • the quality and thoroughness of the documentary research (method adopted, presentation and coherence of the infrapaginal notes and bibliographical references);
  • mastery of tools (main working instruments, sites providing access to various printed sources, etc.); 
  • the quality of the critical reflection;
  • the quality of the language (spelling, syntax and style).
Any use of an artificial intelligence application (including translation assistance and formal rewriting) must be reported and the usage report provided as an appendix. Any use not mentioned will be considered as fraud.

According to article 61 §2 of the General Regulations on Studies and Examinations, ""l'étudiant peut en outre être déclaré irrecevable à l'évaluation s'il n'a pas participé à une ou plusieurs activités d'apprentissage déclarées obligatoires et indissociables de l'UE concernée. La cause d'irrecevabilité et ses modalités d'application doivent être portées à la connaissance des étudiants par le biais de l'engagement pédagogique de l'UE et, le cas échéant, du règlement facultaire y relatif. Il en va de même pour l'étudiant qui n'aurait pas remis, dans les délais fixés (article 123, § 3) ou dans les formes prescrites, les rapports, travaux personnels ou tous travaux imposés dans le cadre de l'activité concernée".

Three unjustified absences will result in refusal of the first session, as will failure to submit the required work on time.

For the second session, students wishing to improve their marks in the 30% continuous assessment will be allowed to resubmit work for which they have obtained a mark of less than 10/20 (new subjects will be allocated). These must be handed in by the opening day of the second session at the latest. The mark for the table-top assignment(s) is deemed to have been obtained.
