Learning unit contents
The aim of this course is to trace the evolution of contemporary public art, tackling such fundamental questions as:
- Art's relationship to context (in situ practices, contextual art, etc.) ;
- The notions of commission and integration;
- The relationship between art and politics;
- The role of institutions (e.g. the Musée en plein air du Sart Tilman);
- Current urban art practices (street art);
- Artistic controversies (censorship, iconoclasm, vandalism).
This course draws on the expertise and research fields of the professor, but also on the skills of outside lecturers.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this course, students will have a thorough knowledge of the various forms of public art, and will be able to analyze contemporary artistic creation in the light of its political, economic and social context, and to understand, for example, the reasons why art in the public space can be the object of rejection and tensions of an aesthetic as well as a moral and ethical nature.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
The course is open to all students, with a basic knowledge of contemporary art history.

Theoretical part :
- Course given ex-cathedra by Julie Bawin, with slideshows projection
- Courses given by specialists and researchers in the field of public art
Practical part :
- Visit of the Musée en en Plein Air du Sart Tilman
- Meeting with an artist (or artists);
- If possible, visit a public art exhibition.

The evaluation is based on knowledge of the theoretical part of the course and on the student's ability to synthesize all the information provided by external lecturers. Students are expected to make links between the various themes covered throughout the course, and to mobilize the notions and concepts developed and expounded.
Students are given a clear explanation of the evaluation procedures.
ATTENTION: in the case of examinations organized remotely, assessment will be carried out by videoconference.
