Learning unit contents

The arts at the court of Francis I

Emblematic figure of the French and European Renaissance, Francis I believed that art and culture could illuminate a reign and bring it a form of immortality. The aim of this course is to evoke Francis I as patron and art collector. We will talk about the portraits of the king, the royal residences and especially Fontainebleau and the collections of objects and works of art.

The course is conducted Fridays, from 10.00 to 12.00 (A2/Philo 2). First session : February 7th, 2025. 

Conditions permitting, a three-day educational trip to Paris and Fontainebleau will be organised. 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Strenthening of analytical abilities and stimulation of methodological reflection.
Introduction to the contextualization of arts with regard to social and cultural history.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

To have followed the course of History of Art and Archaeology of the 15th and 16th centuries given in the 1st cycle, or, in any case, to have a good knowledge of the History of Art of the Renaissance.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

We will meet every week for an ex-cathedra session; a reading report will be requested; a bibliography will enable each student to learn more about the themes covered, if they so wish.

An oral examination will be organised. It will cover the knowledge and methodological subjects covered during the course and the report. The oral examination will be worth 50% of the points ; the reading report will be worth 50% of the points.
