Learning unit contents
This course is envisioned as a more analytical and theoretical exploration of 20th century creation. It is therefore necessary to continue learning the knowledge and concepts seen in the first and second years through a course that is organized into two major parts:
1. Analysis of the work and the thought of the artist Marcel Duchamp (including methodologically and historiographically)
2. Analysis of founding texts of contemporary art in French and English (Adorno, Belting, Benjamin, Didi-Hubermann, Foster, Francastel, Haskell, Krauss, etc.)
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, students should be able to :
- analyse Marcel Duchamp's work and career, understand his central place in twentieth-century art history and the reasons for his influence on the international neo-avant-garde
- understand the monographic approach in contemporary art history;
- confront research questions (because constant links will be made between teaching and research in contemporary art history) ;
- come into contact with textual sources and understand the importance that certain theoretical texts have had (and still have) on the way works of art are analyzed and interpreted.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
The course is open to all students, but it is preferable that they have already taken the 20th Century Art History course.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This is a course in which the teaching aids are designed to be as varied as possible:
- projectionof a diaporama ;
- projection of documentaries ;
- projection of films or short videos;
- bringing students into contact with original works;
- group exercises ;
- organization of question-and-answer sessions

It is possible for one or other course to be given by podcast on e-campus or MyUliège. If, for example, the teacher is away on a symposium, conference or expert mission, the course is either suspended or replaced by a podcast.

Additional information:
Evaluation takes place during the January session.
Evaluation is in two parts:
- the first part is designed to test the student's knowledge and understanding of the material taught throughout the course;
- the second part consists of questioning the student on textual sources. For the second part, the student is not asked to study the texts, but to read them carefully in order to explain their general content. An exercise is organized during the first semester, and a "question-and-answer" session is organized with Alix Nyssen, Julie Bawin's assistant.
PLEASE NOTE: in the case of exams cannot be organized face-to-face, evaluatio will take place via videoconference.
