Learning unit contents

After an introduction to medieval and post-medieval archaeology tracing its historiography, we will consider a thematic evolution through four major chronological periods: early Middle Ages, Classical Middle Ages, Modern Times and Contemporary Period. The topics will be approached mainly from the remains brought to light during recent excavations in northwestern Europe. The material culture, structures and objects of each chronological phase will be reviewed. We will focus particularly on the themes of settlement, production and exchange in order to highlight the methods applied. Depending on current research, site visits will also be planned.
