Learning unit contents
The course of Biology is at a central and capital place in the training of the students engaged in Biomedical studies. It must give the fundamental concepts which govern the life. The lessons are a true trip within the living world. From the smallest elements which constitute it, we will see how they organize themself in increasingly complex structures which acquire new properties and are at the same time the basis of the unity and of the large diversity of the living matter. We will spend time on the basic element of the life: the cell. We will study how it domesticated the essential energy and how it reacts to its environment and how it manages to remain from generation to generation by keeping its particular characteristics.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The aim of this course is to provide a sufficient comprehension of the fundamental concepts driving living organisms. This will favor the interactions between engineers and other professionals of Biomedical sciences (biologists, biomedical scientists, physician, dentist, physiotherapist...).
The course is divided into chapters including:
- Ch1 : Bio-Chemistry
- Ch2 : Life and cells (TP1)
- Ch3 : Cells and organelles
- Ch4 : Molecular biology: from gene to protein
- Ch5 : Some specific proteins (Enzymes, TP2)
- Ch6 : Signaling pathways
- Ch7 : Introduction to immunology
- Ch8 : Proliferation and cell death, introduction to cancerology
- Ch9 : Biotechnologies
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
The course will take into account the large disparity in biology. The student must fluent in french language. Good knowledge of basic chemistry is essential.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
General, Molecular and Cellular Biology is mainly composed of theorical lessons. A part of the course is face-to-face and another part though online videos. A quiz is organised at the biginning of each lesson.
Two practical trainings are organised. Attending at the parctical trainings is mandatory.

This course is primarily delivered face-to-face and is supplemented by videos available on eCampus. Some lessons will also be provided in the form of narrated slideshows available on eCampus. Each lesson (in-person or online) will be followed by a Q&A session at the beginning of the next class.

Theoretical Cours
The course of biology does not include a syllabus. The matter of the course are the topics taught during the ex cathedra lessons. The slides and videos will be always available on eCampus. The teacher recommends the use of the book entitled "Biology" (Campbell & Reece) as textbook. This book will help everybody to better integrate the matter of the lessons. A correspondence between the material taught during the lectures and the chapters of the book is available on eCampus.
Reference : Campbell BIOLOGY, Jane Reece, PEARSON Education, 9th edition. For those who wish to buy a second hand book, the previous edition is also appropriate.
