Learning unit contents

Two parts : Introduction to private Law - Sustainability and transition

Introduction to private law

After an introduction whose purpose is to set private law within the Belgian legal system, we address the topic of private rights (notions of real rights and claims; birth, transmission and extinguishment) as well as the concept of possession in patrimonial domains.
The legal act (definition, classifications, creation, performance, effects regarding people) will then retain our attention, before we examine a specific legal fact, the one of civil responsibility (torts).
In the final part of the class, attention is given to the subjects of Evidence in civil law (ways of proving, admissibility and power of various ways of proving) and to the notion of legal personality (study of natural and legal persons and their capability).

Sustainability and transitions

This part of the course aims to provide students with a scientific knowledge base from a full range of disciplines pertaining to the environmental and social issues of sustainability and transition.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Introduction to private law

The aim of the class is to provide students in law and political sciences with the basic principles of private law, contracts, torts, property law, family law and merchant law. First, these fundamentals constitute the basis of a legal culture; second, they are necessary for understanding further legal classes.

Sustainability and transitions

At the end of this part of the course, and on the basis of the scientific content presented, students will be able to:

  • Describe, differentiate and question the dynamics and interactions of the different spheres of the Earth system;
  • Describe and analyse the interactions between the human and the Earth systems;
  • Demonstrate the importance of considering the issues of sustainability and transition from a systemic point of view;
  • Develop a critical and reflective mindset that enables them to analyse current issues;
Use the scientific knowledge base to combat feelings of eco-anxiety
This knowledge and these skills will be developed by combining an interdisciplinary approach, essential for understanding and appropriating the various topics, with a disciplinary approach enabling students to relate their own discipline to the issues of sustainability and transition.
