Cariology, nutrition and dietetics
The theoretical concepts taught in the Cariology course address the basic notions necessary for the understanding and knowledge of the carious disease and the influence of different risk factors.
The first part of this course of Cariology and oral hygiene and preventive measures, partim cariology will be devoted to the epidemiology, the clinical aspect and diagnosis, the anatomopathology and the etiopathogenesis of caries. The multi-factorial aspect of the carious disease will be detailed. The different risk factors for caries disease will be discussed in this course, as well as the notion of individual caries risk. The particular role of saliva in carious disease will also be discussed. We will also discuss caries detection tools: description, properties, usefulness and effectiveness. Some of these theoretical concepts will be deepened or applied during practical work sessions.
The theoretical concepts taught in the course of Cariology, Nutrition and dietetics partim nutrition and dietetics address not only the basic notions necessary to understand the influence that nutrition can have on this disease but also the dietary advice associated with it, in as part of oral hygiene practice.
Far from turning you into dietitians, this course addresses the nutritional aspect of caries disease, namely the transformation of certain specific foods, which can play a role in the caries process. Indeed, we will see that dental caries is a multi-factorial disease where diet can be a risk factor.
We will also talk about sweeteners.
This course will then address the various pathologies associated with nutrition (bulimia, anorexia, etc.) and the consequences that these can have on the caries phenomenon and/or on mineralized dental tissues. The other consequences that eating disorders can have on the oral cavity as a whole are, on the other hand, specifically addressed in the Pathology of oral development course.
And finally, the rest of the course will be devoted to dietary advice that can have a positive influence on caries, in particular by playing a carioprotective role.
Some of these theoretical concepts will be deepened or applied during practical work sessions.
You will be asked for an integrative assignment at the end of the Cariology, Nutrition and Dietetics course. This assignment will be graded which will count for 10% of the final mark of the 1st session certification assessment.
Dental hygiene and preventive measures
The theoretical concepts taught in the Preventive Dental Medicine course cover the basics needed to assess a patient's level of oral hygiene and establish a preventive oral care plan for a patient. . It is also a general introduction to exclusively preventive oral care. This course is therefore complementary to the General Introduction to Oral Care course. This course will also cover prophylactic cleaning, the various oral hygiene techniques, including brushing and interdental cleaning techniques. The equipment, products and materials necessary for good daily oral hygiene and the implementation of preventive therapies will also be discussed. Some of these theoretical concepts will be deepened or applied during practical work sessions.

At the end of the Cariology course, you
- know the data and epidemiological indices of caries.
- know the anatomopathology, biochemistry and physiopathology of caries.
- know the etiopathogenesis of caries.
- know the clinical appearance of caries and be able to identify carious lesions during a clinical examination.
- be able to carry out a cariological assessment.
- during an oral health check-up, you will be able to identify carious lesions that require the use of preventive care and lesions that require treatment by a dentist.
- be able to carry out an individual caries risk assessment.
- be able to refer his patient to specific practitioners.
- be able to transmit information to a patient concerning the cariogenic or cario-protective nature of his diet.
- be able to carry out an individual caries risk assessment and to provide dietary advice to reduce this caries risk
- be able to carry out a food diary as part of caries prevention
- be able to identify risky eating behaviors.
- be able to analyze the data collected in a food logbook to best advise your patient.

At the end of the course of Preventive dental medicine and oral hygiene:
- The student knows all the preventive therapies that he can perform as an oral hygienist.
- The student knows all the equipment, materials and products necessary for good oral hygiene.
- The student knows all the equipment, materials and products necessary for the implementation of preventive therapy.
- The student is able to assess the level of oral hygiene of a patient.
- The student is able to give instructions to a patient to improve their oral hygiene.
- The student is able to carry out professional chairside cleaning.
- The student is able to apply prophylactic products including fluorides.

The certification evaluation is organized at the end of the teaching unit (January session). This is a written exam held face-to-face.
Questions of the MCQ/QRM/or/or type, pairing tests make it possible to check knowledge and understanding of the concepts taught. Open questions (with short answers (QROC)), texts to be completed and pairing tests evaluate understanding and the ability to apply the concepts taught.
In the 1st session, the mark of the theoretical exam will be equivalent to 50% of the final mark.
A practical work exam will also be organised. This practical work exam will take the form of a clinical situation and will be a written exam organized face-to-face.
The mark of the practical exam will count for 40% of the final mark.
An integrative assignment must be completed for the last Thursday before the Winter Holidays. This integrative assignment will count for 10% of the final mark of the 1st session certification evaluation. In the event of failure in the 1st session, the score for this assignment will not be included in the score for the certification evaluation of the 2nd session.
The 2nd session exam will take place in the same way as the 1st session exam but the distribution of grades changes:
In the 2nd session, the mark of the theoretical exam will be equivalent to 60% of the final mark.
The mark of the practical exam will count for 40% of the final mark.
Individual consultation of exam papers is possible after deliberation for individual feedback (by appointment).
