Learning unit contents

The aim of the course is to understand the mechanisms of change within the process of desistance with a view to promoting the social and community (re)integration of justice-involved people. 

The course will cover several aspects:

- clarification of the central concepts of the course

- understanding and explaining the process of desistance through different theoretical frameworks (contributions from structural, cognitive and identity theories, assisted desistance, etc.)

- Introduction to narrative theory and the role of stories 

- Active learning about narrative identity methodology (interview guide and analysis of narrative scripts)

- implications for the criminologist's clinical practice

 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Deal with the frameworks of desistance
  • Develop a methodology in narrative criminology based on the life story, from the interview guide to the analysis of scripts
  • Become aware of his/her role as a formal (and/or informal) assisted agent of desistance and be able to support desistance processes of justice-involved people
 

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Co-requisite: the criminologist's psycho-social practices course (CRIM4120) is an asset to deal with the basics of the professional relationship with the justice-involved people before moving to  specific interview and analysis techniques.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Ex-cathedra presentations, sharing of life experiences from justice-involved people, analysis of life stories to identify narrative scripts, presentations by professionals in the field who are actively working with justice-involved people in the based of their desistance process and the social and community (re)integration.
