Learning unit contents
The course introduces basic statistics and the language in analytical chemistry. We develop the concepts of method validation, quality assurance and quality control. Then, the course treats on the conditioning of a sample which often constitutes an essential step for the analysis of its components: the solubilization by wet or dry processes, the separation of unwanted elements. Liquid-liquid extraction and introduction to separation methods. We discuss the basic principles of chromatographic separation mechanism. We detail the different parameters that characterize a chromatographic separation. We discuss the main types of chromatography:
Gas chromatography
Liquid chromatography
Ionic chromatography
Size exclusion chromatography
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
To understand, interpret and apply the various steps of an analysis protocol in order to obtain the best separation process in chromatography. Emphasis is given on the identification and quantification processes in gas and liquid chromatography.

The lessons (two hours) are illustrated by several experimental demonstrations or data-processing tools. An interruption from 5 to 10 minutes is provided at about the middle of each lesson.
The laboratory work starts at the beginning of the second semester; the purpose are primarily to initiate the students with the particular requirements of the chemical analysis: not to lose anything, not to contaminate, care, cleanliness and method, strict respect of the experimental protocols... The reliability, precision and accuracy of an analytical result depend, of course, in the selection of the method but also on the dexterity and the skills of the analyst.
This activity is part of the teaching module and is mandatory. The student who does not participate at the entire activity and/or provided their reports outside the deadlines fixed will not be admitted at the exam.

No particular material (except the apron and safety glasses) is necessary for the laboratories. As supplementary information, the consultation of the following works is recommended:

Additional information:
The in-session examination consists of an oral examination with a one-hour preparation before the oral defense. Two questions are asked: an exercise and a theory question.
Three scores are assigned to laboratories and it concerns: the sum of the points of N manipulations/n, an interrogation and the test of laboratory.
The oral examination stands for 70%: the laboratory work for 30% . Note: when the score of the oral examination is lower than 10, the points of the laboratory works are not taken into account.
