Learning unit contents
This course builds on the skills acquired in the Biology course. In particular, it details the organization of the major plant groups, provides notions of plant physiology as well as species ecology and the impact of global change.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify the main groups of plants and their evolutive traits, allowing these groups to diversify
- Describe the development cycles of the major plant groups
- Explain the main principles in plant ecology
- Use and understand basic botanical vocabulary

The theoretical part consists of three parts:
- Introduction to plant biology
- Plant diversity and evolution
- Introduction to terrestrial plant ecology
The practicals and field trip are an integral part of the course. They illustrate the concepts studied in the theory course, provide a concrete way of approaching the subject and develop your reasoning in plant biology. For these practical exercises, you will observe living material, microscope preparations, and work in groups to create a small identification key. The field trip will focus on discovering the morphological diversity within a plant family and their adaptations to climatic conditions. To do this, we'll visit the "Observatoire du monde des plantes" and the herbarium at the University of Liège.

Written work / report

The theory exam is written and consists of MCQs and open-ended questions covering all sections of the course. It accounts for 70% of the overall mark.
The practical exam takes the form of a report based on the various sections of the practical work and the field trip. Forms to be filled in will be given at the beginning of each session of the practical work and field trip, and will form the final report. This section accounts for 30% of the overall grade.
Successful completion of the course depends on passing both the practical and theoretical exams.
