Learning unit contents

Master thesis

The thesis is a substantial individual project accompanied by an internship of minimum 80 working days in a company or in a research laboratory, in Belgium or abroad. The topic must be proposed or approved by an academic advisor, who must be a member of the permanent academic or scientific staff.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.2, II.1, II.2, II.3, III.1, III.2, III.3, III.4, IV.1, IV.11, IV.2, IV.3, IV.4, IV.5, IV.6, V.1, V.2, V.3, VI.1, VI.2, VI.3, VII.1, VII.2, VII.3, VII.4, VII.5 of the MSc in mechanical engineering.

Master thesis

The aim of the master thesis is to prepare the student to the professional life. The student will have to prove that he/she is capable of producing a substantial piece of work using the knowledge and skills, both theoretical and practical, acquired during the engineering studies. The work will include a state of the art, a substantial research or implementation, an analysis of the results and conclusions.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Master thesis

It is highly recommended to take the elective course(s) that best prepare for the work.

Further information:

Each professor provides subjects that they are willing to advise. These subjects are either aligned on the research activities of the professor, or collected from companies / research centers. A list of these subjects is usually available on the JobTeaser platform from the school of engineering.  A student may also submit a subject proposal, but it must be approved by an academic advisor; The student should choose a topic as early as possible, ideally three months before the start date. The Faculty Board ensures that each student is given a subject and that the composition of the jury is in agreement with the regulation. The student should keep the academic advisor informed of the progress of the work on a regular basis.

Written work / report

Further information:

The assessment is based primarily on the student's report. There are no formal constraints on the length of the report, but it will typically be between 50 and 100 pages. The student will describe the context, the problem or specification, the proposed solution with an argumentation of the choices made, his/her evaluation, a conclusion and possibly appendices. The thesis defense is oral and public. It includes a presentation of maximum 12 minutes, a question and answer period of 10 minutes, and is followed by a deliberation. The final grade takes into account the scope and quality of the work done, the quality of the written report and oral presentation, and the relevance of the answers to the questions.

An information session will be held in March (for a thesis starting the next academic year).

In case of an internship in a company, an internship agreement must be signed by the academic promotor, the industrial host, and the studnt. The agreement must be sent to the administrative manager before the start of the internship.

Deadlines for submitting the manuscript are fixed on the first opening day following January 5, June 8 or August 20. The defense usually takes place about 3 weeks after the manuscript submission.
