Learning unit contents

The course content will be defined by the tutor and the student according to student's areas of interest.

Unless another agreement is concluded with the tutor, who remains the main contact person:

- The first essay will aim to provide a general problematised state of the art, enabling an overview of the theme/domain addressed: for example, this will involve contextualising the issue, identifying and defining the key notions and authors, the various approaches developed and any controversies identified; this exercise will enable one or more issues to be addressed, together with the related sub-issues;

- The second essay will target a more specific problematic which must be part of the theme/domain defined but not necessarily developed in the first essay in order to deepen it; or  explore a new problematic that has emerged from the new readings.

Although the theoretical approach (reading and problematisation) is similar to that of the research project, it is a different kind of work in that it does not require :

- neither projection aimed at setting up a future research (cf. the "methodological approach" part of the dissertation project);

- neither fieldwork (cf. dissertation or course);

- neither integrative or specific articulated aim of the 2 essays requested.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Students will acquire a good critical knowledge of a field or theme that they will have defined in agreement with their tutor.

He/she will have improved his/her skills in writing a coherent and structured review of the literature on different subjects (understanding the authors, knowing how to situate their thinking, being able to identify the contribution and limitations of a text, comparing different points of view, possibly identifying new avenues of analysis, etc.).

Students will write two 3,000-word essays (cf. "Leraning unit contents) that they will submit to their tutor over the course of the year. The essays will be presented in "Times New Roman" 11-point font or "Arial" 10-point font, with 1.5 line spacing; margins (top and bottom, left and right: 2.5 cm; binding: 0 cm; header and footer from the edge: 1.25 cm). Only appendices may be added to the 3,000 words. The bibliography ("APA" style) is included in the 3,000 words. The assignment will meet the formal requirements indicated during the master thesis preparation seminar (ANTH0386-1) and will follow the instructions given in a document distributed to students during this seminar.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The course will take place throughout the year. Students should contact a tutor (cannot be his/her Master Thesis project/Master Thesis tutor) at the beginning of the academic year to define the content and terms of the tutoring.

The work schedule (subject to a different agreement with the tutor, who remains the main contact person) will preferably be as follows:

- 1st essay to be submitted to the tutor before the Christmas break;


- 2nd essay due to the tutor before the Easter holidays.
